Parliamentary Hearing: Children’s problems in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan NGO Alliance for Children’s Rights with the support of the Social Policy Committee of Parliament of Azerbaijan and ChildPact organized a Parliamentary Hearing which took place on May 29th 2014. 

The event was officially opened by the Vice-Speaker of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, Mrs Bahar Muradova, who emphasized some of the most important issues the country has to deal with: integration the children with disabilities, prevention of early girls’ marriage and children living in institutions.

The chairman of the Social Policy Committee of Parliament Hadi Rajabli  and Unicef Representative in Azerbaijan Mark Hereward mentioned some of the progress made in adopting laws on children’s rights and international conventions.

The national coordinator of Azerbaijan NGO Alliance for Children’s Rights Nabil Seyidov pointed out that the number of children who committed a crime, especially re-offending crime, significantly decreased in recent years.

The deputy Rabiyyat Aslanova – the chairman of Human Rights Committee, deputy Sevinc Fataliyeva – chairperson of the Committee for International Relations and Interparliamentary ties and Aynur Sofiyeva – the deputy chairman of State Committee for Family, Woman and Children’s Problems have also had short presentations about the situation of children’s rights in Azerbaijan.

Samira Huseynova, a child from the secondary school expressed her and her peers’ desire to live in a safe environment. At the end of the event, the representative of the Ministry of Education Habib Karimov  gave diplomas to the winners of the exhibition of drawings  “Knowing and protecting children’s rights”.
